A 1965-built apartment in Heraklion gets a modern and simple touch. The originally divided-into-four-parts living space becomes the vital area of the apartment where everything takes place. The kitchen is moved from its former independent room—now freed—and becomes part of the living space. A vast working bench–island becomes the central gathering point. The old sliding doors that once separated the entrance hall from the living room were replaced by a built-in bookcase made of marine plywood. The new electrical installation was routed through the ceiling, allowing the preservation of the terrazzo floors—an artisanal craft that is slowly disappearing—as well as the oak wood flooring. With the slight lowering of the ceiling, recessed lighting was introduced, along with thermal and acoustic insulation.
