The renovation and energy upgrade of the Venetian Loggia of Heraklion

As part of this project, we also organised and carried out the architectural competition process for the restoration and upgrading of the Venetian Loggia in Heraklion, a landmark historic building that currently houses the Heraklion City Hall.

The project involved the restoration and comprehensive upgrading of the building, combining the preservation of its historic and architectural character with contemporary requirements for energy efficiency, environmental performance and user comfort.

The existing window frames were replaced with new high-performance timber frames incorporating double glazing. The historic stained-glass panels from the previous windows were carefully integrated into the new glazing, preserving an important element of the building’s architectural character.

A detailed three-dimensional laser survey of the building was carried out to ensure the accurate documentation of its geometry and architectural features. This digital survey provided the basis for the precise design and fabrication of the new elements with a high degree of precision.

Photovoltaic panels were also installed on the roof in an exceptionally discreet manner, carefully integrated to minimise their visual impact on the historic monument.

The project included the installation of a new heating and cooling system, designed specifically to meet contemporary environmental and comfort requirements while fully respecting the morphological and architectural characteristics of the building.

Finally, a new lighting design was developed for the building, enhancing its architectural qualities and highlighting its historic character.
